Tui Na, also known as Chinese massage, is an ancient practice that aims to release the flow of energy around the body. Lots of skilful techniques are used to bounce you back to good health, including kneading, rolling and deep pressure that’s applied to precise points on your body. Perfect for a midweek treat, it will help relieve stress and soothe injured muscles, leading to a greater sense of wellbeing.

What to expect from a Chinese massage?

Treatments can last anywhere from ten minutes to over an hour and are performed on a massage table or firm mat. Once you’re all set to go, your therapist will work your muscles, helping them to relax and allowing the blood to flow more regularly. Tui Na focuses on certain acupressure points in your body’s system (without the icky needles!) so the body can kickstart its own healing process.

If you can hack the pressure, we recommend booking multiple sessions to ensure that your energy is at happy equilibrium. You may feel a little bit of pain through the prodding and pulling of your limbs, but once this is over you’ll reap the rewards of true harmony and happiness. Intriguing stuff!

Good to know

  • It is believed that Tui Na links different emotions to different organs, so if you’re feeling particularly low on your treatment day, your therapist will more than likely pick up on it. Clever, right?
  • There’s no need to strip off as there are no oils involved, but it’s probably best to wear loose clothing so it’s easier for the therapists to work their magic.
  • Your massage will take place in a private room with soothing music, gentle lighting… the whole works! All you have to do is show up and allow your body to slip into a slower pace of life for a while.

The sciencey stuff

Tui Na, (pronounced “twee na”) is similar to a deep tissue massage, and sits alongside acupuncture, acupressure and cupping, although this type of therapy only involves hand massage. Tui Na offers a whole host of miracle benefits, both physiological and psychological, promoting a sense of euphoria that allows the body to heal itself. Tranquility, found.
